Becoming Jane
Is it that surprising that as an English major, I never read any Jane Austen? I personally didn’t like her style of writing. I did like the movie “Pride and Prejudice” with Keira Knightly. This weekend, with Andy’s parents, we went to go see “Becoming Jane” with Anne Hathaway, James McAnvoy and James Cromwell. This movie was the an adaptation of Jane Austen’s life. It had love, it had betrayal, it had comedy. I think this was a great role for Anne Hathaway. She really shows her growth as an actress.
I do not know what I have seen James McAnvoy in, but he also is a very good actor. You can just feel the sexual tension between Jane and Tom (McAnvoy). The thing that really is sad is if you know anything about Jane Austen, its that she died a spinster. So even though there is a love story, its kind of fruitless to believe it will work out in the end. Although I did want a different ending. Real life sucks like that sometimes.
One other thing that made me think in this movie was arranged marriages. It is amazing how much the world has changed since Jane’s time. I could never imagine marrying without love. But this also is the society I was brought up in. I do not like that as an unmarried woman, they were called spinsters. But an unmarried man, that is okay.
This movie was thoroughly enjoyed by Andy, me and his parents. It is a comedy, drama, romantic love story. So I guess in short, it’s a funny chic flick. It was about 2 hours, but the time seemed to fly buy.
